Gravity

Working on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity was an incredible experience, especially being part of this Oscar-winning masterpiece. Graham had the privilege of tackling a particularly challenging and rewarding shot that truly pushed his skills to the limit.

After completing Layout, Alfonso wanted to continually refine the camera work and narrative flow, which led to an intense two-month collaboration with him in animation—adjusting camera angles and layout—followed by another two months of detailed animation.

The shot, is entirely animated except for a 2D faceplate of Sandra Bullock. We’ve included some of Graham’s thumbnail sketches he created during the process, which were instrumental in locking down the camera’s story and visual flow. And for an extra bit of fun, stick around till the end to see the fully keyframed animated “swimming” shot Graham created—people are often surprised when I tell them it’s entirely keyframe animated! :)
